Local pub quiz

What other event in British culture can subconsciously fuel your desire to learn and retain random information, on the premise that one evening per week you’ll experience masochistic joy as your brains are pressed hard into the Pub Quiz Master’s juice blender?!

Well, this is known as the British Pub Quiz and it takes place every night of the year all over the country… hoardes of British folks make this a special night; friends and family meet up at the their favourite (lucky!) table, drinks are lined up in thirsty readiness, paper and pens are distributed, along with a magnifying glass (don’t ask!!)

Not to mention the variety packets of crisps for those nervous nibbles! A pub quiz I attended one Sunday evening had sophisticated tapa-style nibbles for the tables… I just couldn’t concentrate with all the aromas!

The 5-member quiz team I sit with on Tuesday evenings are a wonderful bunch of very intelligent folks. The Team Leader keeps everyone motivated and focused, and they each have their areas of interest and expertise. I like to try out the puzzles, and if I’m lucky the occasional question can relate to something I’m passionate about, but on the whole I just love the team banter and high spirits!

D and I posed with the team’s winnings (one of many successive wins at the local quiz by this team, I might add!). This was a pretty big night for them… the team won £180, so it truly does pay to know the 16th element on the Periodic Table, the names of Goldie Hawn’s pets and the font used by the Audi car manufacturer 😉

And if you don’t know those things, you certainly will after a Pub Quiz!!

Rainbows & autumnal ice-creams

OK, not exactly unique to Britain but I captured a rainbow today out of my window and rather liked it!

The weather here has been pretty warm for early autumn, anywhere between 10 – 22 degrees, and either very beautiful clear blue skies or deep greys like this photo!

And why do the British love weather reports?

The answer to that may come up in a Pub Quiz, one day….!

Ham House

A short walk alongside the river Thames in Richmond takes you to Ham House. Quite a popular place for strolling with the family, walking the dog, riding horses, buying herbs (at great prices…!), taking caffè latte in the large gardens or finding a quiet spot for intimate whispers between lovers! (seems to be plenty of those around here too!)

Historically, Ham House is fascinating. It is one of the most haunted mansions in the UK, and the owners, through time, have procured marvelous pieces of furniture and decor. The cabinets are particularly noteworthy, especially if you like secret drawers, intricate wood design and carvings, ornate goblin handles and curvy slender legs!

Petersham Nurseries

I fell in love with this place the moment I walked into the wacky greenhouses of boho-come-shabby chic-come-weird-come-Gothic dens of wonderfulness! The name of the place gives nothing away of the charm here, but I hope my photos intrigue you enough to drop by if you’re passing through 🙂
